Blogging 101 Series: Getting Organized

Hey readers! Today is the last day of the Blogging 101 Series but fear not! This will not be the last time I will be posting tips about blogging. I wouldn't leave y'all hanging!

Getting organized is one if not the most important thing to do when initially starting your blog. You are probably thinking, "why do I need to get organized?". You need to because then your blog will be all over the place. Besides getting signed up to a blogging platform and designing your website, CONTENT is KEY!

One thing I learned from the very beginning is that you just can't go in with a mentality of, "Oh, I'll write about 'this' today." It's hard to come up with a good post, at least for me it is. I can definitely sit down and just write, but to come up with ideas needs more thought process.

In college, I learned how to come up with an editorial calendar for a magazine, which can easily be applied to a blog. Both in my advertising and public relation classes all involved some kind of long-term calendar that would be implemented into a campaign. I take a similar track with my blog. Also, I just happen to be a person that strives in structure even if it is somewhat vague.

What is an editorial calendar?
Basically an Editorial Calendar is nothing but a 12-month plan with idea topics. For my blog specifically, I go through regular 12-month calendar and look for any holidays that would give me ideas for DIY posts or series topics.

I learned that writing about random topics can cause you to have chaotic readership. It always nice for it to flow from one topic to another.

Let's take March for example: What holidays are in this month? Or what happens during this month?

March is always associated with Spring. So in my editorial calendar I would include:

    • Spring cleaning

    • Texas Independence Day (This is obviously a Texas thing)

    • Fat Tuesday (Mardi Gras)

    • Gardening

    • Saint Patricks Day

    • Lent.

From here I will go and use a Weekly Planner one that includes Monday-Friday to write up blog topics with bullet points of things I will write about.

Example of this would be this weeks Blogging 101 Series:

    • Monday: Why did I start blogging

      • Include bullet point ideas

    • Tuesday: What equipment do I use

      • Include bullet point ideas

    • Wednesday: I was busy this day so no blog post was posted nor did I write a potential blog for this day.

      • Remember you don't have to write everyday; Quality vs Quantity should be what you strive for when you write.

    • Thursday: Wordpress vs Blogger

      • Include bullet point ideas (This involved research and personal research so there is work involved when coming up with topics, just a heads up. Again, you are striving for quality posts.)

    • Friday: Getting Organized

      • I'm sure you reading this, so all of what I've written on this post is actually vaguely written down in bullet points and then expanded when I began writing.

I do put Saturday and Sunday on the weekly planner, but as many of y'all have noticed I rarely post on the weekends. Why? Because these are usually the days I use to brainstorm and come up with the weeks blogpost. I tend to do a weekend-wrap up mention on Monday's just for a glimpse of what I do on weekends.

This seems a very detailed way to write up a blogpost. Of course this method is mostly for those that are blogging for DIYs, Fashion/Styling, Cooking, and Lifestyle bloggers. If you are just wanting to write your thoughts at what not, then you most likely don't need it to be this detailed. It can seem overwhelming at first, but once you get the hang of it, you will be writing blogposts left and right. :)

Have a great weekend!

Until next time,
Felipa xoxo

Blogging Series 101: Wordpress vs Blogger

wordpressvsblogger

Hey readers! I always get the question of why I moved from Blogger to Wordpress. I also get asked what are the differences and which is easier to use. I've finally took the time this week of the Blogging 101 Series so I'm about to go into detail on the Pros and Cons of both and finally why I chose Wordpress.org.

--------------------------------------------------------

WORDPRESS

PROS:

• You get absolutely 100% control over your blog.

I took a few classes on PHP, HTML and CSS and have always wanted to work more with it and Wordpress is definitely a place you can edit PHP, HTML, CSS, run ads, and make the site look as professional as you want or as personal you want.

• Huge number of designers that design and develop for wordpress.org sites.

There are free design templates, but I chose to pay for mines it was a pre-made $35 one from Etsy and the designer was 17th Avenue Designs. You can also pay up towards $2000+ for a complete custom theme made JUST for you. A unique one you know no one will ever have. I unfortunately don't have that kind of money to spend on one JUST YET, but perhaps in the future I will.

• Wordpress.com is the same concept with Wordpress.org when it comes to posting blog posts so there will be no complications going from .com to .org, the platform will look exactly the same.

• There are thousands of ‘plug-ins,’ which are essentially are apps for your blog. You can search for plug-ins and one-click install them to your site.

I use plugins that connect to Pinterest, contact forms, Instagram, analytics, Jetpack, MOJO Market place, Wordpress importer (For when I moved my wordpress.com blog to .org) and resume plug-in.

CONS:

• To have a blog on Wordpress.org you have to self-host your blog, which means you will need to purchase server space and your domain name with a third party company (such as  Go Daddy, or Blue Host). This can range in price from $3-$12 per month, or a lot more if you have high traffic.

I personally use Blue Host which comes with a Free Domain Name, but since I already had mines through google+enom all I had to do is have the DSN servers pointed to Blue Host (sounds complicated but it's really not that bad).

• You will need to hire a blog designer to help you design and develop your site, and get it installed on the server. This is probably is one of the more complicated parts of using the .org portion of Wordpress. Unless you have ever actually dealt with this type of webpage development, then it's better to let a professional help you with this.

• Overall, WordPress.org will give you the most control of your site long term, but has the highest initial investment. By initial investment is that like I've stated before, you purchase EVERYTHING but then again its worth the cost, because it will be uniquely yours.

• Many bloggers find WordPress.org more intimidating, as tweaking certain elements of your site will often require knowledge of HTML or CSS. YouTube and a few google searches of how to use CSS and HTML will always help you out. http://www.w3schools.com/css/ became my best friend when I first started learning how to build websites in one of my classes in college.

BLOGGER

PROS:

• 100% Free of any charge (except for when you want to use your own domain name which is only $10/year, instead of the free yourname.blogger.com)

• Blogger is powered/owned by Google, so if you already have a Gmail account, you already have a Blogger account. All you have to do is activate it. Easy.

• Easy to use – with everything from making pages and posting new blog posts.

• The Blogger designs run off of HTML and CSS, and there are plenty of designers out there ESPECIALLY on Etsy, where you can purchase cute designs for as little as $5!

CONS:

• Limited image storage space. Blogs each have 1GB of file storage, which is shared with your Picasa Web Albums. I really hated this because if you are using a DSLR camera like I do, you know the files on some of the photos are HUGE and well if you do any DIY, Cooking, or are a Style Blogger, this is definitely not a great thing to use.

• Many bloggers can’t get the design functionality they want, especially if they are looking for advanced features. I always ran into problems when it came to uploading a photo and t would run all the way into the right column. It was always a mess and VERY frustrating. At least for me it was. Having social media buttons were easy to have, but then running stuff like Instagram could get tricky.

• SPAM comments! I hated this when I had Blogger. It's hard to monitor them when you get them. Wordpress.com/.org does a great job of putting all comment pending and automatically puts spam comments in the junk folder.

If you’re currently on Blogger and are thinking about making the switch, be sure to work with a designer/developer who has migrated sites from Blogger to WordPress before (unless you are confident enough to know how to do this yourself), and knows how to do things like re-direct your domain (so that if people go to your old yourname.blogger.com address it’ll send them to your new page), export your comments, etc.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Me personally?

I have blogged on Blogger, Tumblr (which I don't cover here), WordPress.com AND WordPress.org. In my experience, (I've only used WordPress.org for a little over 2 months) has offered me the most control over my blog! I was finally able to have a blog (for my entertainment and creative outlet) but also make it look professional for when potential employers to look at my resume and portfolio and have a nice website to look at.I love that my Blog Design came equipped with SEO capabilities so I can have better searches and key word optimization.

I used the regular wordpress.com for about 6 months and had it mapped through them for $13/year + my domain name, but I was never satisfied with how my blog looked. It was restrictive in the design I wanted, no matter how much I changed the background and header.

Tumblr was definitely not for me when it came to wanting regular readership. Everything gets "re-blogged" and gets lost with all the others. Now I only use it for a means of entertainment and re-blogging. I actually have a RSS feed of this blog there so whenever I post a blog here it is also published there.

For my own blog, WordPress.org just provides the most power, flexibility, and capabilities versus Blogger. I love to post pictures and having galleries of adventurers, DIY, cooking, outfit of the days,  and makeup reviews. However, if you are a brand new blogger and don’t want to spend a lot of money up front on your new venture, starting out with Blogger. I started with blogger because at the time (5 years ago) I didn't know much of CSS so Wordpress seemed WAY out of my league. Blogger was simple, already had a Gmail Account and it was quick and easy to set up. In the long run I wanted to take my blog to the next level with sponsors, ads, more creative web design freedom so here I am on Wordpress.org. I wanted to keep my blog AND have somewhere I could display a resume and portfolio. Why pay more for TWO websites when I can have it all in one and make it look fun + professional? This was my choice and I'm not here to tell you which to choose. I'm just sharing my opinion and experience :).

Hope this helps!

Until next time,
Felipa xoxo

Blogging 101 Series: What equipment do I use

Hey guys!

So continuing with this weeks Blogging 101 Series, many have actually emailed me to ask what do I use on a day-to-day basis for my blog in terms of computer, software, equipment, etc. I use many electronics to post and come up with ideas for the blog itself. I'm not here to say YOU have to go out and buy these things too. I've had many of the things I'm using on my blog for many other reasons and it just so happens I was able to just use them for blogging purposes.

Computers:

I only have one and I use a Macbook Pro 13" it's the regular one without the Retina display. I've had mines for about 3 years now and never had a problem with it. I'm not saying you should go buy it or anything it's just my preference.

I also use my iPad 2 to brainstorm ideas when I'm on the go. I also blog from it since there is a WordPress app that is available for download or just on the Safari browser itself. I edit photos on it too when I use the SD/Media Card reader for quick editing.

Software:

I use Adobe Creative Cloud to edit and create some of the images seen on my blog. The 3 main components of Adobe that I use often are InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator. Like I've mentioned before I had these for other reasons (Advertising and Graphic Design classes), but have come in handy for editing things on the blog. Don't have the money to purchase these? You can always try it for 30days or if you are looking for a FREE photo editor like photoshop I recommend using GIMPIt's an open source software thats available for free download.

I use Notes on both my iPhone 5s for when inspiration hits. I have the iWork apps also available on iCloud and use the word processing software to write down ideas on my iPad.

DropBox is a great app/website to use for importing PDFs and other things to keep everything together.

Camera:

I currently use an Olympus PEN Mini (E-PM1) with interchangeable lenses (I have the M. Zuiko Digitial 14-42mm lens). I also use a 16GB SD card that holds many photographs which I never fill up to begin with so it's plenty of space for me.

I of course use my iPhone 5s as an impromptu camera when I'm not carrying my DSLR. You can usually tell when I post photos using my phone. The quality is so obvious.

 Other things:

I carry a small notepad with me everywhere and a few pens so when I'm sitting at Starbucks and I get ideas I have a quick way to write them down.

Wireless Keyboard from amazon for my iPad makes it easier to write a blog post instead of trying to type on the actual screen.

Cheap white poster boards they're like 50¢ each for a clean and crisp background.

I carry everything, well if I'm on the go, my iPad, camera+lens, iPhone, and notebook in my trusty Longchamp Le Pilage in the Large size. It's seriously so light that when you add everything in the bag it won't have you feeling like your should might give out on you.

There you have it guys. This is all the stuff I use some of the things are pictured but these are the main components that lets me put together my blog on a day-to-day basis.

Until next time,

Why did I start blogging

Hey there readers!

So this week I've decided to do a type of Blogging 101 Series. To start this series off right, I'll be letting you guys into a little more of my world and how I began blogging.

I started blogging my freshman year of college having accounts on both Tumblr and Blogger (Blogspot). I no longer have a blogger, well I do but only because I purchased my domain through Google (more on this in a post later this week). Blogging was very much a creative outlet for me and a means of entertainment. I along with every other college student would spend too much time on Facebook and didn't have much of a hobby with classes and homework.

Like I've mentioned before I am an Advertising and Public Relations graduate so I always have enjoyed writing and creating logos and then thought, why not start something that could combine both of the things that I enjoy doing? So that's how I began blogging. At the beginning I only gripped about how hard classes were, how hard it was meeting for the many group projects, how hard it was juggling organization meetings, and how gross and the lack of good tasting food was provided by the cafeteria. In general it was all just "Felipa living in the dorms and college life".

Obviously as many of you have seen my blog has evolved. For the better part of January and February I was working on re-branding my blog. What I mean is since I'm no longer in college, I'm in that transition of being a young professional. I also have so many ideas that I was never really able to work on when I was in college nor the audience for me to share those ideas. I am ambitious so instead of having my blog hosted by just Wordpress.com I went ahead and transitioned it to Wordpress.org and hosted it privately. I will be talking about this in a future post, again, part of the Blogging 101 Series.

So there you have it guys! I needed a creative outlet and turned to blogging, which now has evolved to what I have now. I identify myself as a Lifestyle Blogger. I do a bit of everything, beauty, DIY, reviews, and my life.

Why do you guys blog?

Until next time,
Felipa xoxo

Beauty Event at Neiman Marcus

Hey readers!

I've been looking forward to the Beauty Event at Neiman Marcus for what seems like FOREVER! They always have give the best samples that any department store offers hands down! Also, I've been itching to get my hands on some Yves Saint Laurent lipsticks. Basically to qualify for the free gift you have to spend $125. It seems like a lot, but you can also buy a fragrance and it qualifies. I needed an eyebrow pencil and a new eyeliner so with that along with lipsticks qualified me for the free gift for the beauty bag and the Yves Saint Laurent pouch samples as well.

I must say that the lipstick is not as pigmented as I wished, but it is so creamy that I have no problem with it. The eyeliner and brow pencil I haven't tested/used but I like the color and the fact that the eyeliner has a smudge sponge at the end to smoke it out and the brow pencil has a spooly at the end. All of that is something I've always wanted without having to buy any extra tools/brushes.

Here are photos of the free gifts, samples, and purchases from today.

I have actually been asked what my lipstick collection looks like so I've included both my high-end designer lipsticks to the more affordable lipsticks. Most lip colors are very similar to one another.

Are you guys going to go out and get the free gift with beauty purchase? You can also receive the gift if you purchase online. I just didn't want to wait for my items to come in when I live like 10 minutes from the actual store. Also, you get to choose which color you want. I really liked the orange bag opposed to the green and pink ones that are also available.

Until next time,

Eating, Socializing, and Celebrating.

Hey there readers!

After the last couple of DIY posts for Valentine's Day, here is a quick update on what's been going on in my world. Saturday night was one of my Best Friend's 23rd Birthday! She's the youngest of the group of 4. It was a nice little dinner at Taco Diner | Mexico City Taquria. The food was delicious, well at least what I ate. I had the "Nachos de Pollo al Pastor" in reality they were more like mini tostadas to me. I also had a cocktail named "La Paloma" I didn't really like it. It was very strong on the tequila and tasted too much of cucumber than it did what it said a mix of "fresh fruit". That was basically my only complaint of the place.

Here are some photo's of Saturday night:

Valentine's Day Nails #DIY #Nails

I thought I would get into the holiday spirit by painting my nails into a little festive pink and sparkle.

I used a base coat of Sally Hansen Hard as Wraps, Sinful Colors in White over the base coat, then the Deborah Lippmann in the color Bop (pink}, followed by the Happy Birthday glitter on both my ring fingers.

I never paint my nails in pinks because it's just not a color I ever gravitate too. My nails are always in deep reds, blacks, grays, and blue shades. This is different but it was perfect to use on a day like today.

Happy Valentine's Day!

Retail Therapy

Hello readers! We are one day away from Valentine's Day! I don't have a Valentine this year, but I don't mind.

♪ "Single Ladies put your hands up!"♪

Anyways, I went to the mall for a little retail therapy (what's new?) and a little birthday shopping for my friend's gift. I think I was successful in my finds today. Everything was on sale; well almost everything. I didn't set out to buy anything for myself, but there was so many sales I just couldn't help myself. I bought myself a watch, face moisturizer, lipstick (I think I own like 8 now), iPhone case, and an "emergency kit". I believe I only needed the moisturizer, but then I got a little carried away and well bought the rest.

Review:

  • Chanel Hydra Beauty Gel Creme: This smells so good! It has a floral scent and is for normal skin. It's really creamy considering it's a "gel". Yes it was VERY price, but I honestly don't ever spend money on anything for moisturizer. Most of the time I just throw on some primer on my face and I'm out the door. It's not anti-wrinkle or anything like that, because I have pretty young skin so this is what was recommended for me. It's surprisingly has A LOT of product, so I'd say it was worth the price for a healthy, moisturizing, and hydrating product.

  • Chanel Rouge Coco Shine #46: I got this lipstick because I was looking for a subtle stain and something in a natural lip shade. I'm very into red and plum shades that I wanted to at least get something pinkish. It's moisturizing and isn't stick. I love Chanel lipsticks and have never complained and this one doesn't disappoint either.

  • Betsy Johnson Anchor Watch: I have no complaint about this watch. I thought it was cute, especially the ANCHOR! It was a must buy even though I have no uses for watches. I currently own 6 and wear basically none. Even when I wear one I still catch myself looking at my phone.

  • Bodhi: The Tech Collection: This iPhone case had sequence. I think that's sufficient information on why I purchased it. I love it!

  • Pinch "Skinny Minimergency Kit: I've always wanted this kit so I can put in my purse ever since I saw College Prepster. It's such a neat little kit with everything you could ever think of needing. It contains 21 items: bandage, blotting tissues, facial tissue, bobby pins, double sided tape, ear backs, breath freshener, dental floss, tampon, emery board, clear nail polish, mending kit, lip balm, built-in mirror, clear elastics, stain remover, deodorant towelette, nail polish remover pad, pain reliever, hairspray, and safety pin. All in a a small clutch the size of the iPhone 5. This is a life saver!

DIY Valentine's Day Gift

Hello Readers! It's been a while. I've been contemplated moving my blog, not so much taking it off of Wordpress but more like taking it and host it privately so I could use a custom layout. I'm still deciding on this so the change might come as soon as today or perhaps sometime into the week.

In the mean time...

I have a simple but cute DIY project for Valentine's Day. Whether it's for a significant other or simply just a cute gift for friends this project will not break the bank! The whole project was around $6 with tax. I went to Dollar Tree and picked the following items:

  • 2 Cute mugs with hearts on them

  • Miniature Kit-Kats

  • Shredded paper for gifts

  • 2 hearts on it stick

It's really simple and easy to put together. I just added the candy inside the mug, filled them with the shredded paper, stuck the heart and there you have it! A simple yet thoughtful gift for someone. Don't like Kit-Kats? Use whichever mini candy you prefer or whatever the person that is receiving the gift happens to like. Make it your own!

Here is the finished product:

Inspiration went somewhere but not here.

Hello my lovely and now exponentially growing readers! (Thank you, by the way, for noticing and taking time from your day to read my blog!). I know I haven't posted in a few days, but that's due the lack of inspiration. It's been a pretty slow week, well except Super Bowl Sunday. I thought the commercials were mediocre nothing that stood out. Cheerios, Budweiser, and Volkswagen all had the same typical commercial, it's safe. There wasn't any actual shock factor in these years commercials and couple that with a boring game, well it was all just quite bland. Except however, Bruno Mars and the Red Hot Chili Peppers! They were awesome!

Now that that is out of the way, I can focus on other things. I received an exquisite statement necklace in the mail yesterday. I posted a sneak peak of it on my Instagram. I will be uploading photos here along with an outfit of the day post. So keep a look out for that post later this week.

Now, today I did 2 things. One, I had an interview for a job (yay! for looking for employment) and two, I decided I wanted to invest in an actual DSLR. I currently have a Micro 3/4 Olympus Pen Mini (E-MP1) that although I love, I still can't take to sports arenas because it has a detachable lens, talk about bummer! If I would have known they were going to do that I never would have purchased it. I have a point-and-shoot and extreme-zoom lens SLR-type camera already. Basically what a micro 3/4 camera is, is a mini-DSLR, more compact and mirror-less. So I'm thinking if I sell my Micro 3/4 which I rarely use anyways, I can and will buy a REAL DSLR camera.

Screen Shot 2014-02-04 at 6.34.13 PM

The camera I have in mind buyings is the Canon Rebel T-3 (12.2MP) which happens to be on sale on HSN and comes with a second lens! This will really be an investment camera that is suitable for any occasion and help me with blog pictures and such. I tend to use my iPhone for everyday photos like selfies (yes, I take selfies), quick video, and just whenever I don't feel like taking out my point-and-shoot. And let's be honest, no one ever uses those to begin with!

Screen Shot 2014-02-04 at 6.27.29 PM

I don't think I've mentioned that I'm a bit of a camera geek...

My DREAM camera is the Leica X2! It's priced at almost $2000. It's like the Holy Grail of cameras! I really want this one some day, but that day isn't today. However, if anyone reading wants to gift me one, by all means, go right ahead. I wouldn't mind ;).

Screen Shot 2014-02-04 at 6.25.39 PM

Well now that I've updated y'all on what has been going on in my life, or lack there of, haha! I will begin posting more frequent posts in the upcoming days.

Until next time,
Felipa xoxo
