graduate school - why I am attending

I left the blog for a while there because I was deciding on some big life decisions. Actually, it's not that big, but it does impact my free time. I had always said I would go back to school to get another degree because, in an ideal world, I'd be a professional student. However, I have to pay bills, so I became a working adult.

Fast forward four years and I finally decided that another undergrad degree wasn't something that interested anymore, but rather furthering my current career as a digital marketer. Back in May, I was fiddling with the idea of maybe it's time to go back. I looked at various schools with Digital Marketing degrees. However, the catch was that it would have to be a strictly online degree, from an accredited school of course. After finally pulling the trigger and applied to 3 programs, which all happened to be Master in Science degrees. Yep, that's right, I applied for graduate school.
I, fortunately, was accepted and then came the decision to which to attend. I ended up choosing St. Edwards University in Austin, Texas. Again, this is strictly an online degree! It's also an accelerated program that is 16 months and fits with a full-time working professional.

I'm now in week 2 of a 7-week course. It's definitely fast-paced, but manageable.

You might be wondering why I waited for 4-years after my undergraduate to go to graduate school. Partially, yes I had bills and student loans I couldn't ignore, but the other part I just wanted to start working. I switched majors 3 times as an undergraduate - civil engineering, public relations, and finally settled on Advertising with a minor in PR. I would have probably just settled for a communication degree of some sort.

Here are my reasons why I decided to go back:

  1. I am at a place where I am financially stable to be able to afford all the extras of school and don't have to rely on my family for help.
  2. I worked for 4 years at an agency that made me find my niche - Digital Marketing.
  3. I wanted to advance my career and now have enough knowledge of how the real business world works and able to apply that experience to my learning.
  4. I loved school as an undergraduate - lecture, reading, etc. I missed learning.
  5. Finally, and this is a silly one, I wanted to get a Masters degree by the time I turned 30. (Hello, bucket list!)

And that is my back to school story! I'm really enjoying it right now, even though a lot of the work is done on weekends. As many know, I'm a planner, so I have found the way to study, socialize, work 40-hours, keep up with my planning sticker hobby, and finally, getting back to what I love dearly, blogging. Content is being brainstormed right now! I'll update on graduate school life occasionally, but for the most part, it'll be more social media branding related, lifestyle, how to's, product reviews, and maybe following my journey on Keto, if only Rosas Taco Tuesday weren't my weakness ;).

Until next time,
